The Buffalo State
campus is located at the northern end of Elmwood Village in the heart of the
city’s thriving Museum District. This neighborhood is defined by three
prominent and diverse museums: the Burchfield Penny Art Center on the college
campus; and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery and the Buffalo History Museum,
across Elmwood Avenue. The program also partners with the nearby Buffalo Science Museum, Karpeles Manuscript Library Museums, and historic Forest Lawn Cemetery, as well as many other galleries and museums. This prime location and exceptional resources have inspired
the creation of a nationally competitive graduate program in Museum Studies to
benefit both graduate students and Western New York’s museum community.

The Museum Studies program prepares museum professionals who are distinguished by their versatility and creative problem-solving ability. The program utilizes a multidisciplinary approach including theoretical and practical instruction and experience. In addition to the required courses that provide the basic framework for understanding the growing discipline of museum studies, students can specialize in one of three areas of museum work: collections management & curatorial practice, museum experience & education, or museum operations.
